Do I need an STI test?
If you're asking the question, a conversation with a doctor is a sensible next step. Testing is worth considering after a new partner, sex without a condom, hearing that a partner tested positive, or noticing symptoms like discharge, sores, pain when you pee or bleeding after sex. Many infections cause no symptoms, so feeling fine doesn't rule anything out. The doctor asks about your history without judgment, including the kinds of sex you've had, because that shapes which samples are needed, such as throat or rectal swabs as well as urine.

How does testing work if the visit is online?
A video call can't collect a sample, so testing happens in two steps. During the visit, the doctor works out which infections to look for and gives you a lab requisition. Next, you go to a community lab collection site in Medicine Hat, or anywhere else in Alberta, to give the urine, swab or blood samples listed on the form. Check the site's hours before heading over and follow any preparation instructions written on the requisition.
