What We Test For

- Syphilis — RPR + treponemal test (window ~4–12 weeks)
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea — urine NAAT for genital exposure; extragenital swabs (pharyngeal, rectal) when relevant (window ~1–3 weeks)
- Hepatitis B — surface antigen, surface antibody, core antibody
- Hepatitis C — antibody test (window ~3 months)
- Trichomoniasis — vaginal NAAT when symptomatic

Treatment We Prescribe
When tests are positive, we prescribe evidence-based treatment per Public Health Agency of Canada and Bugs & Drugs Alberta guidance:
- Chlamydia — single-dose azithromycin 1g OR doxycycline 100 mg BID × 7 days (doxycycline preferred in rectal infections)
- Gonorrhea — ceftriaxone 250 mg IM single dose + azithromycin 1g oral (rising resistance — sensitivity-guided)
- Syphilis — penicillin G IM (intramuscular injection arranged through community lab or AHS sexual health clinic)
- Trichomoniasis — metronidazole 2g single dose
- Bacterial vaginosis — metronidazole oral or vaginal
- Genital herpes — acyclovir, valacyclovir (Valtrex), or famciclovir — episodic or suppressive
- Hepatitis B — referral for specialist management
- Hepatitis C — referral to liver clinic — modern direct-acting antivirals cure 95%+ in 8–12 weeks
- HIV — confirmed positive results are referred immediately to an Alberta HIV/AIDS clinic for ART
- PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis) — Truvada or Descovy daily for high-risk Albertans, supported through AHS
How the Virtual Visit Works

Window Periods — When to Test
Testing too early can give a false-negative result. The window period is the time from exposure until a test reliably detects infection:
- HIV (4th gen antigen/antibody): test at 4–6 weeks post-exposure; confirmatory at 3 months
- Syphilis: test at 4–12 weeks post-exposure
- Chlamydia / gonorrhea (urine NAAT): test at 1–2 weeks post-exposure
- Hepatitis C antibody: test at 8–11 weeks post-exposure; confirm at 6 months
- Hepatitis B surface antigen: test at 6 weeks post-exposure
- If you have a high-risk recent exposure (within 72 hours) consider HIV PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) — go to ED or sexual health clinic same-day
Partner Notification — Done Discreetly
When an STI is confirmed, partners need to be notified so they can get tested and treated. Your options in Alberta:
