Rural Alberta, long drives and the in-province rule
A virtual visit works the same on a farm, at a work camp or in a small town as it does in a big city. All you need is a phone signal or an internet connection, and a plain phone call is fine if video keeps freezing. That can save a long winter drive for something like an ear infection. One rule applies everywhere: you must be physically in Alberta for the entire visit. That matters in Lloydminster, which straddles the Saskatchewan border, and for anyone about to leave the province on a trip. Take the call on the Alberta side, or wait until you're back.
When to use 911, Health Link 811 or an emergency department
Online care is for problems that can safely wait for a scheduled call. Some symptoms can't. Call 911, or have someone take you to the nearest emergency department, for any of the following. If you can't tell how serious something is, Health Link 811 connects you with a nurse for free at any hour, and the nurse can suggest the right level of care.
