Do you need an STI test?
You don't need symptoms to book, and you don't need to justify wanting a test. People ask for testing for all kinds of ordinary reasons. The doctor will simply ask what's going on so the right tests get ordered. Common reasons include:
- Burning when you pee, unusual discharge, or a sore, bump or rash in the genital area
- A new partner, more than one partner, or a condom that broke
- A partner who has told you they tested positive
- Wanting a routine check before you stop using condoms in a relationship
What the visit costs
If your Alberta Health Card is active, the STI testing visit is free. If your card isn't active, the visit costs $80, and the amount is shown before you book. That includes students and workers whose health coverage is still with another province. Separate TelePlus Care programs, including men's sexual health care such as erectile dysfunction treatment, weight loss and hormone therapy, are paid services and aren't part of this free visit.
From the call to the lab
During the call, the doctor asks about symptoms, the kind of contact you had, when it happened and any past infections. Tests are matched to those answers: often a urine sample or a swab, and sometimes blood work. You'll receive a requisition to take to a community lab collection site. Timing is part of the plan, because a test taken too soon after an exposure may not pick up an infection yet. The doctor will tell you when testing is most useful and whether to repeat it later.
Driving in from Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge or Clairmont
Outside the city, every appointment can mean a drive, and winter roads make that harder. A virtual visit removes one trip: you talk with the doctor from home and save the drive for giving samples. Alberta treats several infections, among them chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, as notifiable, so public health is told about confirmed cases. Nurses may then reach out to partners to recommend testing and treatment, and MyHealth Alberta says your name and personal details aren't shared with those partners.
