- The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program offers free, publicly funded short-term cognitive behavioural therapy to Ontario adults aged 18+, with self-referral available; in York Region it is delivered by CMHA York Region and South Simcoe (Ontario Health; CMHA York Region and South Simcoe).
- Publicly funded psychiatry in Ontario is covered by OHIP but usually requires a family-doctor referral, and waits are widely reported to range from several weeks to more than a year, in part because psychiatrists are concentrated in urban centres and many are nearing retirement (Ontario research literature; UWOMJ).
- Canada's 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline launched in November 2023 and is coordinated nationally by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH); you can call or text 988 free, any time, from anywhere in Canada (CAMH).
- In York Region, which includes Markham, the 310-COPE Community Crisis Response line provides 24/7 phone and text support at 1-855-310-COPE (2673) (Your Support Services Network; CMHA York Region and South Simcoe).
- York University's Markham Campus at Markham Centre opened on August 31, 2024 as York Region's first public university campus, delivered in partnership with Seneca (City of Markham; York University).
Clinical content is reviewed for accuracy and scope. TelePlus Care appointments proceed only when clinically appropriate after a real assessment, and the doctor will explain the next step if virtual care is not the right fit.
What online mental health support looks like in Markham
Online mental health support means meeting a qualified provider by secure, private video — no waiting rooms, no commute along Highway 7 or the 407, no time off work. For many people across Markham, from Unionville and Markham Village to Cornell, Berczy Village, Wismer, Greensborough, and the growing community around the York University campus at Markham Centre, virtual care simply fits real life better. You join from your living room, your car on a lunch break, or a quiet corner of home. Sessions are one-on-one and confidential. TelePlus Care serves adults across York Region, and because we work online, scheduling tends to be faster than the traditional route of waiting for a referral. If you have never tried therapy before, that's completely okay — many of our clients are reaching out for the first time. The goal is a space where you feel safe enough to say what's really going on.
- Secure, private video sessions you join from anywhere in Ontario
- One-on-one and confidential — for adults across Markham and York Region
- Often faster to start than waiting for a public referral
- Welcoming for first-timers and long-time therapy-goers alike
Concerns we help you work through
People reach out for all kinds of reasons, and none of them are too small. Our providers support adults in Markham working through relationship problems and communication struggles, breakups, separation and divorce, and the grief of losing someone you love. We help with the emotional aftermath of a car accident or other traumatic event, including post-traumatic stress (PTSD) — flashbacks, hypervigilance, and feeling constantly on edge. We support anxiety and panic attacks, depression and low mood, ongoing stress, and work burnout, which is common among Markham's many commuters and tech professionals. We also help with sleep problems, which so often travel alongside stress and worry. You do not need a diagnosis or a 'good enough' reason to start. If something is weighing on you, that is reason enough to reach out.
- Relationship problems, breakups, separation and divorce
- Grief and bereavement
- Stress after a car accident, trauma, and PTSD
- Anxiety, panic attacks, and depression
- Chronic stress, work burnout, and sleep problems
Therapy approaches tailored to you
Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and your provider will tailor the approach to you. Many people benefit from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a practical, evidence-based method — the same core approach used in Ontario's publicly funded Structured Psychotherapy program — that helps you notice and shift unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns. For trauma and PTSD, some providers use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which helps the brain reprocess distressing memories. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on making room for difficult feelings while moving toward what matters to you, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) can help with recurring depression and anxiety. Some people prefer supportive, talk-based counselling to process a specific loss or life change. You and your provider decide together what fits, and it's normal to adjust over time. What matters is that the work feels collaborative and paced for you.
- CBT — practical, evidence-based, for anxiety, depression, and stress
- EMDR — for trauma and post-traumatic stress
- ACT — making room for hard feelings while living by your values
- MBCT — for recurring depression and anxiety
- Supportive counselling for grief and life transitions
Medication management: what our doctors can and cannot do online
Talk therapy helps many people on its own, but sometimes medication is part of the picture. When it is clinically appropriate, our Canadian-licensed doctors can assess whether an antidepressant — such as an SSRI or SNRI — may help, discuss the benefits and possible side effects with you, and provide a prescription and follow-up. This is always a shared decision, never a push. Please note an important safety boundary: controlled substances are not prescribed online. That means we do not prescribe benzodiazepines (for example, Ativan, Xanax, or clonazepam) or ADHD stimulants (such as Adderall, Vyvanse, or Concerta) through virtual visits. These medications require in-person assessment and ongoing monitoring, and prescribing them online would not be safe or responsible. If your care needs that kind of medication, your doctor will help you understand the safest next step, which may mean an in-person provider. Therapy is available with or without medication.
- SSRIs/SNRIs (antidepressants) may be prescribed when clinically appropriate
- Shared decision-making with full discussion of benefits and side effects
- No benzodiazepines (Ativan, Xanax, clonazepam) prescribed online
- No ADHD stimulants (Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta) prescribed online
- Therapy is available with or without medication
How TelePlus Care fits within Ontario's mental health system
It helps to know how the wider system works. In Ontario, a visit to a psychiatrist is covered by OHIP, but it usually requires a referral from a family doctor, and access can be slow — waits of several weeks to more than a year have been widely reported, partly because psychiatrists are concentrated in urban centres and many are nearing retirement. There are also excellent free public options: the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy (OSP) program provides no-cost short-term CBT to adults 18 and older, with self-referral available, and in York Region it is delivered by CMHA York Region and South Simcoe. TelePlus Care is a private, faster-access option that complements these services — useful if you want to start soon, prefer the convenience of video, or want therapy and medication guidance in one place. We are glad to point you toward public programs too; the right door is whichever one gets you help.
- OHIP covers psychiatry, but it typically needs a referral and can involve long waits
- OSP offers free short-term CBT for Ontario adults 18+ (self-referral available)
- TelePlus Care is a private, faster-access complement to public services
- We will happily point you to public options if they suit you better
