Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, so testing is recommended based on risk rather than how you feel. Ontario residents may want to arrange testing in any of these situations:
- A new sexual partner or more than one partner
- A partner who has tested positive for an STI
- Symptoms such as unusual discharge, burning during urination, sores, or pelvic pain
- A condom that broke or unprotected sex you are unsure about
- Routine sexual-health screening even without symptoms
How Online STI Testing Works Across Ontario

Once results return, they are reviewed and, if anything is positive, treatment is prescribed or arranged.

Understanding Window Periods
Timing matters with STI testing. After an exposure, some infections take days to weeks to become detectable, a gap known as the window period. HIV and syphilis, for example, may not show on a test until weeks after exposure, so testing too early can give a falsely reassuring result. Your doctor will advise when to test and whether a repeat test is needed later to confirm a negative result.
When to Seek In-Person or Emergency Care
Online testing is suitable for routine and low-acuity situations. Certain red flags need in-person or urgent care rather than a virtual visit. If any of the following apply, go to your nearest hospital emergency department:
- A possible recent high-risk HIV exposure within the last 72 hours, which may need urgent post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) right away at an emergency department
- Severe pelvic or testicular pain, especially with fever
- High fever, severe abdominal pain, or feeling very unwell
- Pregnancy with any STI symptoms or exposure
- Painful sores or symptoms that are rapidly worsening

Your visit and your results are kept private. Consultations are conducted on PIPEDA-compliant infrastructure, and results are shared with you directly. If a test is positive, the doctor will explain what it means and prescribe or arrange appropriate treatment, and may discuss notifying partners.
