What We Prescribe in Alberta

- Stye and chalazion — warm compresses 4 times daily; antibiotics if secondary infection; ophthalmology referral if persistent
- Blepharitis — lid hygiene with diluted baby shampoo or lid wipes, warm compresses
- Dry eye component — preservative-available artificial tears (Systane, Refresh)
- Severe allergic eye disease — short courses of mild topical steroid (under specialist guidance only)
Red Flags — When We Refer to Ophthalmology or ED
Some red eyes hide serious problems that need an in-person eye exam, slit lamp, or ED assessment. Go in person if any of the following apply:
- Eye pain (more than mild scratchy discomfort)
- Vision changes — blurry vision, double vision, halos around lights
- Photophobia (light hurts)
- Contact lens wearer with red eye — risk of corneal ulcer; remove lens and seek same-day care
- Recent eye trauma or chemical splash
- Pupil shape or size change
- Suspected herpetic eye disease (cold sores near eye, dendritic ulcer)
- Severe swelling around the eye — possible orbital cellulitis
- Newborn with eye discharge — direct paediatric or ophthalmology assessment
How the Virtual Visit Works
Three steps. A clear photo of the eye helps your doctor differentiate the cause.
- Step 1 — Book a slot and complete intake. Upload 1–2 clear close-up photos of the affected eye(s) in good light
- Step 2 — Meet your licensed doctor by secure video. They review the photos, ask about discharge pattern, itching, pain, contact lens use, and recent contacts

Daycare / School / Workplace Notes

Hygiene to Stop Spreading It
Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are highly contagious. Reduce spread:
- Wash hands often and avoid touching the eye
- Use a fresh towel and pillowcase daily during active infection
- Do not share towels, makeup, or contact lenses
- Throw out eye makeup used during the infection
- Stop wearing contact lenses until the infection has fully resolved and discard the affected pair
- Stay home from work or school until 24 hours after starting antibiotic drops (bacterial) or until discharge clears (viral)
