Red Flags — When to Go to ED
Some causes of nausea and vomiting are emergencies. Go directly to your nearest Alberta ED or call 911 if you have any of the following:
- Vomiting blood or material that looks like cofdetail grounds
- Severe abdominal pain, especially with fever or right-lower-quadrant pain (rule out appendicitis, bowel obstruction)
- Sudden severe headache ("worst headache of my life") with vomiting — rule out stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Confusion, drowsiness, or neurological symptoms with vomiting
- Severe dehydration — no urine for 8+ hours, dizziness on standing, very dry mouth, sunken eyes
- Vomiting in a young infant (< 6 months) or any vomiting that contains bile or blood
- Suspected pregnancy with severe vomiting and inability to keep anything down (hyperemesis gravidarum) — may need IV fluids
- Diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms — vomiting plus fruity breath, very high blood sugars

Hydration & Home Care
Most viral gastroenteritis resolves in 24–48 hours with good home care:
- Small, frequent sips of clear fluids — water, diluted juice, ginger ale, broth, oral rehydration solution
- Pedialyte or Gastrolyte for kids and severely dehydrated adults
- Avoid milk, alcohol, caffeine, and fatty foods until symptoms ease
