COVID-19 Treatment, Paxlovid & Sick Note Online in Alberta
Tested positive on a rapid test, feeling unwell, or need a sick note for work? TelePlus Care connects Albertans with a licensed doctor by secure video — usually within an hour — to assess your symptoms, decide if you qualify for Paxlovid, and issue any documentation you need. No need to expose anyone at a walk-in clinic. For residents physically located in Alberta at the time of the consult.
Book Your Appointment Now
TelePlus Care offers same-day virtual COVID-19 visits across Alberta. A licensed doctor reviews your symptoms, checks your Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) eligibility — which depends on age, vaccination, comorbidities, and time since symptom onset — and prescribes antivirals or symptom care when appropriate. Sick notes, return-to-work letters, and long-COVID follow-up included. A licensed doctor reviews the concern and explains the safest next step.
- Paxlovid must be started within 5 days of symptom onset to be effective
- AHS prioritises Paxlovid for high-risk groups: age 65+, immunocompromised, multiple chronic conditions, pregnancy
- A licensed doctor reviews virtual consultation requests
- Sick notes and return-to-work documentation are issued during the visit when clinically supported
- Severe symptoms (chest pain, severe shortness of breath, confusion, blue lips) require ED — call 811 or 911
Clinical content is reviewed for accuracy and scope. TelePlus Care appointments go ahead only when a doctor agrees it is the right call, after a real assessment, and the doctor will explain the next step if virtual care is not the right fit.
Who Should Book a COVID Consultation
Most COVID-positive Albertans can be assessed virtually. Book if any of the following apply:
- Positive rapid antigen or PCR test, especially if you are in a high-risk group (age 65+, immunocompromised, pregnant, multiple chronic conditions)
- Symptoms suggestive of COVID and a recent close contact or exposure
- Worsening symptoms day 5–10 — secondary bacterial pneumonia and worsening hypoxia are real risks
- Need a sick note or return-to-work letter for an employer
- Long-COVID symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, chest tightness, post-exertional malaise) lasting beyond 4 weeks
- Need a Paxlovid eligibility assessment before your 5-day window closes

Paxlovid (Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir) — Eligibility & How It Works
Paxlovid is an oral antiviral that reduces the risk of severe outcomes when started early. Alberta criteria evolve with each wave — your doctor will apply the current AHS criteria during your visit.
- Must start within 5 days of first symptom onset
- Generally prioritised for: age 65 and over, immunocompromised adults, organ transplant recipients, pregnancy, multiple chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity BMI ≥ 30)
- Significant drug interactions — your doctor will review every prescription and supplement you take
- Treatment is a 5-day course taken twice daily; AHS supplies Paxlovid through specific Alberta pharmacies at clear appointment steps before booking to eligible patients
- Not appropriate for severe kidney disease or for certain medications that cannot safely be paused
- Not the only option — your doctor will discuss alternatives (remdesivir IV, supportive care) if you do not qualify

Symptom Management for COVID-19
Most healthy adults recover at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter symptom care. Your doctor will personalise advice based on your symptoms and history.
- Fever and body aches — acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) at standard doses
- Cough — honey, lozenges, hydration; cough suppressants when needed
- Sore throat — saltwater gargle, lozenges, OTC analgesia
- Nasal congestion — saline irrigation, short courses of decongestant or nasal steroid
- Hydration — small frequent sips even when you don't feel thirsty
- Rest — push yourself only after symptoms have clearly improved; pushing through can prolong recovery
- Pulse oximeter at home — useful if you have one; saturations consistently below 92% on room air need urgent assessment

Sick Notes and Return-to-Work Documentation
Your doctor can issue:
- Sick note for the duration of your isolation
- Return-to-work or return-to-school letter with the appropriate clearance date
- School absence note for parents on behalf of a child (with the child or parent present)
- Employer-required confirmation of COVID diagnosis when supported by the visit
- Long-COVID accommodation letter when symptoms persist and are documented

Red Flags — When to Go to ED or Call 911
COVID-19 can become a medical emergency quickly. Do not wait for a virtual visit if any of the following apply:
- Severe shortness of breath at rest, or trouble speaking full sentences
- Chest pain or pressure
- Blue lips, face, or fingertips
- Confusion, drowsiness that won't lift, or trouble staying awake
- Oxygen saturation consistently below 92% on room air
- Severe dehydration — not able to keep fluids down
- Worsening despite 7+ days of symptoms, especially in high-risk groups
- Call 911 or go to your nearest Alberta emergency department (Royal Alex / UAH in Edmonton; Foothills / Peter Lougheed / South Health Campus / Rockyview in Calgary; Red Deer Regional; Northern Lights in Fort McMurray; Chinook in Lethbridge)

Long-COVID Follow-Up
Persistent symptoms beyond 4–12 weeks after the acute infection are common — fatigue, brain fog, post-exertional malaise, chest tightness, palpitations, anxiety. Your TelePlus Care doctor can:
- Order bloodwork to rule out other causes (CBC, thyroid, vitamin D, ferritin, ANA when indicated)
- Coordinate referral to an Alberta long-COVID clinic where available
- Issue work accommodation letters for graduated return-to-work
- Manage anxiety, sleep disturbance, and pain components
- Refer to physiotherapy with post-COVID rehab experience and cardiology when needed for palpitations or POTS-like symptoms
