What We Treat Virtually
Most adult musculoskeletal pain can be assessed and managed virtually. Book if any of these apply:
- Acute back or neck pain from lifting, twisting, sleeping wrong, or shovelling snow
- Sciatica with shooting pain down one leg, without weakness or bladder/bowel changes
- Knee, shoulder, hip, ankle or wrist pain — mechanical, overuse, or post-activity
- Generalised body aches from a viral illness or recent strenuous exercise
- Flare-up of known osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
- Tendon and ligament strains (tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy)
- Chronic pain follow-up — refilling stable non-opioid regimens, coordinating physiotherapy
Medications We May Prescribe
Your doctor will choose the safest effective option based on your history, age, kidney function, and any current medications. We follow Canadian Pain Society and Toward Optimized Practice (TOP) Alberta guidance.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) — first-line for mild-moderate pain
- NSAIDs — ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), diclofenac (Voltaren), celecoxib (Celebrex). Prescribed with stomach protection if needed
- Topical NSAIDs — diclofenac gel (Voltaren Emulgel), lidocaine patches — useful for localised joint or back pain with fewer systemic side effects
- Muscle relaxants — cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), methocarbamol (Robaxin), tizanidine — short courses for acute muscle spasm
- Short course of oral steroids — selected radicular back pain cases
- Low-dose tricyclic — amitriptyline or nortriptyline at night for chronic pain with sleep disturbance
- Topical capsaicin and other adjuncts for chronic osteoarthritis
- We will NOT prescribe opioids (Tylenol 3, Percocet, Oxy Contin), tramadol, or gabapentinoids (gabapentin, pregabalin) on first virtual visit
Red Flags — When We Refer You In Person or to ED
Some back, neck, or joint pain hides serious problems. We will not treat virtually if any of the following apply — we will direct you to ED or arrange an urgent in-person assessment.
- New weakness in a leg or arm
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or saddle-area numbness (cauda equina red flag — go to ED immediately)
- Fever with back pain (rule out spinal infection)
- Severe pain after a fall, motor vehicle accident, or other significant trauma
- Unintentional weight loss with pain
- History of cancer with new bone or back pain
- Severe night pain that wakes you, or pain that is constant and progressive
- Sudden chest, jaw, or arm pain — call 911 (rule out cardiac cause)
How the Virtual Visit Works

- Step 1 — Book a slot online and complete a short intake covering pain location, duration, what makes it better/worse, recent injury, current medications, and any red flags
- Step 2 — Meet your licensed doctor by secure video. They may ask you to demonstrate movements on camera (range of motion, gait, straight leg raise). They screen for red flags and discuss the plan
- Step 3 — Receive your prescription, physiotherapy or imaging referral, and a written self-management plan. Prescription is sent to your chosen Alberta pharmacy
Physiotherapy and Imaging Referrals in Alberta
Most musculoskeletal pain improves faster with movement and physiotherapy than with prolonged rest or imaging.
- Physiotherapy referral — many Albertans qualify for AHS-available physiotherapy through a community PT clinic or workplace benefits; we can issue the referral letter
